Darien Martial Arts Students Shine in Kempo Classic 2022 Tournament

DARIEN, CT — Many of Darien’s martial arts students shone last Sunday in the 2022 Kempo Classic tournament at Wilton Field House.

The tournament featured 290 competitors, ages 3 to 68, from Connecticut and New York, who competed in 15 unique divisions.

Events included:

  • Maneuvers – a series of movements requiring skills containing blocks, strikes and throws used in self-defense.
  • Sparring – “free form” full contact combat where fighters use protective gear and attempt to outmaneuver their opponent.
  • Kata Forms – a longer, highly detailed choreographed pattern of martial arts moves.

Sensei Michael Nahan, owner and head instructor of Kempo Karate in Darien, organized the tournament, the first such event since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Significant Achievements of Kempo Darien Students

Aly Matullo, 14, and William Raskopf, 13, of Darien, took first and second place in the fight for 12-14 year olds, a double elimination event.

Matullo, a three-time former fighting champion, lost in the first round and worked her way into the losers’ pool, fighting back-to-back four times to face the undefeated Raskopf, who put up an incredible performance in the championship. . match.

Needing to win twice against the same opponent, Matullo won the first game 3-1 and the second game 3-2 to take first place.

Christina Filewych, 6, Max Cohen, 5, and Patrik Crowell, 5, of Darien all won the first, second and third maneuvers respectively for the 4-6 year olds (surname AG).

Darien’s Charlie Zerzan went undefeated to take first place in the fight for 9-10 year olds.

Norwalk’s Stefan Belopavlovic took second place with several notable games and scored first in maneuvers for 9-10 year olds.

Isaac Lam of Darien and Aubri Limoges, also of Darien, took third and fourth place respectively.

Darien’s Madison Laforteza came in second place to win a trophy in her first martial arts tournament.
