Detroit Urban Survival Training guy to corner UFC fighter

UFC, meet DUST

Viral sensation Commander Dale Brown, founder of Detroit Urban Survival Training (DUST), will bring his expertise to the cage on Saturday. UFC middleweight Joaquin Buckley has signed up Brown as a cornerman for his UFC Fight Night 201 bout at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, he confirmed in an Instagram post Thursday after an initial report from TMZ.

Brown has become increasingly popular over the past year for his “survival” videos in which he quickly escapes simulated life-threatening situations using unusual maneuvers with relative ease. The subject of numerous memes and parody videos, Brown hosted Buckley at DUST headquarters earlier this year.

According to the official Detroit DUST website, Brown “used his knowledge of martial arts, his Army firearms training as an airborne paratrooper, and his experience as a private investigator to create a tactical training system of modern survival” and has been teaching it to others since 1994. .

The system is described as a mix of “Kyokushin, Japanese Karate, Korean Hapkido Karate, Japanese Aikido Martial Art, Japanese Jujutsu, Japanese Judo, JKD and Chinese Qinna/Chin Na”.

It’s unclear what specific role Brown will play in corner Buckley (13-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who takes on Abdul Razak Alhassan (11-4 MMA, 5-4 UFC) on the main card. Either way, his presence is a rare “celebrity” on the corners at a UFC event.

UFC Fight Night 201 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+.
