Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson calls for tournament with brothers Jorge Masvidal and Diaz

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is in high demand these days, as everyone from Sean Brady to Khamzat Chimaev to Shavkat Rakhmonov has called him up for a fight.

Rakhmonov is the latest prospect hoping to move up the welterweight rankings using Thompson’s No. 7 position as a rung. He just beat No. 10-ranked Neil Magny in dominant fashion at UFC Vegas 57, submitting Magny with a second-round guillotine choke. Nine of the ten minutes saw Magny being checked on the ground by the combat sambo expert.

‘Wonderboy’ doesn’t seem too interested in fighting Rakhmonov, but the other fighters the Kazakh has called intrigued him. In a new video on his YouTube channel, Thompson said:

“He called me, Masvidal and Nick Diaz. I feel like the three of us should just have… the three of us fight, a four-way tournament. See who stays in the division. The loser has to come out. I like this idea… Let’s do it, man. UFC, make it happen. I think that would be really cool. A little tournament.

As for Shavkat Rakhmonov, Thompson joked about only being called out by wrestlers before adding:

“What’s crazy is literally the whole population where he’s from messaged me…I only got 18 messages but after that fight I got a hundred and something. Just like ‘Fight him! Fight him!’ Or just flag emoticons. And it’s still broken English. “You. Fight it.””

In the end, however, Thompson seemed willing to take on “Nomad.”

“Never mind, man. Let’s go. We will see.

Thompson hasn’t fought since losing a decision to Belal Muhammad in December 2021 that was so one-sided the judges scored it 30–25, 30–26 and 30–26. Like most opponents who beat “Wonderboy”, Muhammad used Thompson’s lack of wrestling to defeat the karate specialist and keep him there for fifteen minutes.

No doubt other powerhouse wrestlers like Rakhmonov and Brady would love to do the same if given the chance.

Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson declines Sean Brady appeal

Sean Brady is another rising welterweight prospect who hopes to fight “Wonderboy” in the near future. However, Brady failed to generate the same hype as Rakhmonov, which may be why Thompson flatly rejected his appeal.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, ‘Wonderboy’ said:

“I know Sean Brady called me, but Sean Brady…I know exactly what he’s going to do. I don’t think it’s going to be fun for the fans because he’s just going to shoot, shoot, shoot. This which is understandable when you’re in a situation like mine. There are other guys out there. We just have to make it happen.

With Stephen Thompson on a two-fight losing streak, he could really use an opponent who isn’t a collegiate wrestler or Caucasian sambo beast.
