Viola Davis Shares Intense Training Sneak Peek For New Film ‘The Woman King’

Viola Davis is ready to fight in her next film, The female kingand she reveals some of her training for the action-packed role.

The actor, who plays General Nanisca in the new film, shared a video of her gym regiment on Instagram, tagging her trainer, Gabriela Maclainwith much praise and thanks for his hard work.

The video shows Davis performing lifting exercises with pulleys and barbell weights, with the definition of his arm muscles on full display.

The caption reads: “Thank you to my amazing trainer, @gabrielamclain, for preparing my body for #TheWomanKing! Can’t wait to see you in theaters September 16th! 🗣 Agojie… 👸🏿💪🏿👊 🏿 🙏🏿❤ @womankingmovie.”

The official Instagram account of The female king commented in support, “She’s our wife king. She’s our inspiration. 💪🏿💥.”

Many celebrities, friends and fans also shared their support, with no time to die star Lashana Lynch, who is also part of the cast of woman king, writing, “Play 👏🏾 No 👏🏾 Gamessss!!!!”

Davis revealed in an interview with vanity lounge this training began a few months before production and included “four hours a day, five days a week. Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and machete weaponry training”.

In the new role of General Nanisca, Davis steps into the shoes of a little-known, yet extremely heroic and accomplished historical figure who led the all-female military rule of the Dahomey Amazons.

The Washington Post shed light on a project led by historians from the African School of Economics who are trying to find descendants of the Amazons.

Not much is known of their history, although historians believe that the Amazons of Dahomey probably originated from Queen Hangbe of the early 1700s, which was protected by a group of female bodyguards.

Also known as Agojie, Nanisca and her fellow warriors were the inspiration for Black PantherThis is Dora Milaje.

Realized by Gina Prince Bythewood, The female king also stars Jayme Lawson, Sheila Atim, Jordan Boler, Jean Boyega, and much more. It hits theaters on September 16.
